Buying a House???

Buying a house...what a strange and cool proposition.

It'll be nice to have a home and be settled for a while and to stop filling up the landlords pocket with my hard-earned over-time dollars.

Just never thought that I would be at that point in my life, because I haven't lived in a house since I was 12. It's just been apartments and one duplexy shot-gun since then.

Seems like most houses have the same stuff, such as big closets, fireplaces, big kitchens. I guess that means we're all supposed to want the same thing??? Weird.

Well, since all the houses we've seen pretty much have the same stuff, I figure we should just look for a house in decent shape in the right place for the right price. But, as in everything , the talking is easier than the doing...

What do YOU think? House buying advice would be greatly appreciated at this point...

Take Care and thanks for the advice,
Dani P

Be sure to overestimate utility bills and taxes and insurance when looking at your budget. The LAST thing you really want is to be house poor - trust me! :-)

No, all houses aren't created equal. The problem is that character will add to the price of the house significantly. Question is, which is more important to you? You can buy a little 1500 sq ft cottage in my neighborhood for the same price that you could buy a 2500 sq ft home in a nice development. But are you development people? We went looking a couple of weekends ago and I almost cried at the thought of living in one of those neighborhoods. Not sure I could do it. Good luck!

Good advice ladies. We are definitely not housing development types and we don't want to be house poor. And we don't want to commute, so we're looking for a place within 5 miles of our jobs. So, we narrowed the location down and are starting the process. Anyone feel like getting a coffee and looking at houses?

So we went w/the condo route. It's pretty good. We wanted to stay in the city so this was the best decision for us. Still have all the fun things that were included in apt living - pool, billiards, computers w/printers, security, garage, close to public transit, etc.

Anyways, on the law school thing - now is prolly a bad time to ask me what L/school is like b/c I'm heap in exams which means I have a knife to my wrists and a belt around my neck. Only one exam at the end of the sem does suck - lotsa pressure. Very competitive and stressful.

I have met the coolest people though. Some of my peers are awesome - ambitious goal-oriented people w/big ideas and really cool stories. Some of them suck and just want to make a zillion dollars, too. My profs though are AWESOME! I am doing work w/the COOLEST prof and he has really mentored me through this semester. I am soo lucky to have met him. I have also been extremely challenged intellectually by my FREAK'N AMAZING Con Law prof who is a bad-ass feminist and a really powerful instructor. She is so cool outside of class and hosted a fundraiser for one of our student groups at her house. Really cool.

Also, while some of the material is horrible, a lot of it is really interesting. It is changing the way that I think - which is great.

My advice, don't go to law school if you want to make a go-zillian dollars. That is not a good enough reason b/c it is too hard. I have a feeling that is not why you are considering it, though. Only go if you KNOW you REALLY want to, and REALLY want to work hard, and have a desire to help people or some related intent.

Anyways, be happy to talk more - feel free to give me a buz anytime after this Sat (my finals will be over at 6pm) - 972-965-4239

Hugs, ALC

Good luck on those finals.

About law school... I think about law school, but I am just sooo burned out right now. However, my job is definitely not intellectual, so the mental starvation is making me itch for school again. I took up tutoring Spanish and working on my photoshop/illustrator skills, so those pursuits along with the thesis are feeding my brain right now. I tell you what, I don't want to be a public defender. Maybe I would do corporate law or international patent/export law. It's interesting to me. I kind of get to see the lawyers at my company handle those areas and it seems interesting.

I have thought about doing a lot of things. Maybe I should just be for a little while and stew on it. In the meantime, I am working on my own little side business(es)--teaching and art contract work.
